Answers to feet problems

Footwear

It is a well-documented fact that badly fitting shoes cause a large amount of our foot problems

Some useful tips to remember for adult feet:

  • Shop late in the day, after you have been on your feet.

As the day goes on our feet will actually get longer and swell. If you buy your shoes first thing in the morning there is a good chance they will feel tight and rub by the end of the day.

  •  Have both feet measured.

You will often find that one of your feet is slightly bigger or wider than the other. Always buy your shoes to fit the bigger foot you can always add an insole or a heel grip to the other shoe.

  • When you are standing there should be ½ inch – 1.5 cm from toes to end of shoe.

If you can feel you longest toe pressing on the end of the shoe it is likely to rub and cause excessive pressure to the area leading to problems .i.e corns or Ingrowing toenails. Also when you are walking down hill and your foot slides forward it will become even more battered by the end of your shoe.

  • Ensure there is plenty of depth over toes.

If the toe part of the shoe is shallow there is also more chance of the toes becoming squashed, especially if you toe are already curled or hammered in shape.

  • See that there is no rough surface inside uppers or soles.

Often a shoe that has stitching on the outside as part of their design can have rough stitching inside. It may only feel very tiny but if you can feel it with your hands there is a good chance it will soon be irritating your feet too. Check that shoes do not have rough areas on the sole such as dried bits of glue or small tacks that are not flattened properly, these can also lead to problems.

  • Shoes that you wear everyday should have a fastening.

  • Straps on sandal should not irritate the big or little toes.

  •  Even new shoes should be comfortable & not need “ breaking” in.

We often try shoes on in a shop because we like the way they look but they feel really uncomfortable as we walk around the store. However we are shoe that once we have worn them for a while they will be fine……..

This is often not the case and you find that they are still really uncomfortable weeks later and you have wasted your money. Generally if you are walking round the shoe shop limping things are never going to improve…… Think twice before you spend your money!!!

Wear the right shoe for the right occasion!!!!

I believe that no shoe is really wrong, you may just be wearing it at the wrong time. If you are going for a walk try to wear a shoe that are going to protect and support your foot and not rub and lead to you having blisters. If you are going for a special night out where you are not going to be walking a lot you may decide to wear your posh glam shoes. If you are combining a walk with a posh night out it can be a good idea to take your posh shoe with you in a bag and do a swap when you get there.
